Standing with Our Protectors: Honoring National Police Week 2025

by Ernest Van Glahn

Every year in May, communities across the United States come together to honor the bravery, sacrifice, and dedication of law enforcement officers during National Police Week. In 2025, we observe this important time from May 12 through May 18—a week dedicated to remembering fallen officers and showing gratitude to those who continue to serve and protect our neighborhoods.

Why National Police Week Matters

Created in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, National Police Week centers around Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15. It’s a time not only for remembrance but also for reflection. Law enforcement officers face uncertainty every day when they put on the badge—and they do it to keep us safe.

From the smallest towns to the busiest cities, officers respond to calls, protect the vulnerable, and step into difficult situations so we can live our lives with peace of mind. For that, they deserve our full respect and support—not just this week, but every day.

A Community That Cares

As someone who works closely with local families and helps them find safe, welcoming places to call home, I see firsthand how much our communities rely on dedicated public servants. Our officers are more than just uniforms; they are neighbors, mentors, and everyday heroes. They attend community events, check in on our schools, and keep our streets secure.

National Police Week gives us a meaningful opportunity to recognize those efforts and say, “We see you—and we appreciate you.”

“It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.”
—Vivian Eney Cross, Survivor
