Honoring the Backbone of Justice: National Correctional Officers Week 2025

by Ernest Van Glahn

Every day, thousands of men and women stand watch behind the walls of our nation’s correctional facilities. Their mission? To ensure the safety, security, and order of environments that most will never truly understand.

From May 4–10, 2025, we observe National Correctional Officers Week—a time to recognize the unwavering dedication, courage, and professionalism of correctional officers across the United States.

🛡️ Guardians of Safety and Order

Correctional officers play a vital role in the criminal justice system. They are peacekeepers, mentors, crisis managers, and protectors—all within some of the most challenging environments imaginable.

Their jobs demand physical readiness, mental resilience, and emotional strength. Every shift brings new and unpredictable challenges, and yet, these professionals show up, stand tall, and do the work.

🙏 A Week of Gratitude

National Correctional Officers Week, first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, serves as a reminder of the essential yet often underappreciated work correctional officers do. It's an opportunity for communities, families, and institutions to show their gratitude and support.

So, whether through a handshake, a message of thanks, or simply acknowledging their sacrifice—let’s make sure correctional officers know they are seen, respected, and appreciated.

To every correctional officer across the nation—thank you.
Your dedication helps uphold justice, safety, and dignity for all. We honor you this week and every week.
