Honoring Resilience and Legacy: Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month 2025

by Ernest Van Glahn

Every May, the United States comes together to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM)—a time dedicated to recognizing the history, achievements, and enduring contributions of Jewish Americans who have helped shape the nation's story.

In May 2025, we reflect not only on the rich cultural heritage of the Jewish community but also on the strength, resilience, and innovation Jewish Americans have shown throughout generations. From science and the arts to education, business, civil rights, and beyond, the impact of Jewish Americans is deeply woven into the very fabric of our society.

A History of Strength and Perseverance

Jewish Americans have a long and profound history in the United States, dating back over 350 years. Through times of triumph and adversity, they have remained steadfast in preserving cultural traditions, fighting injustice, and contributing to the greater good. From the earliest settlers to modern-day leaders and change-makers, Jewish Americans have continuously exemplified resilience, compassion, and commitment to progress.

Contributions That Transcend Generations

Jewish American influence can be seen in virtually every aspect of American life:

  • Science & Medicine – Visionaries like Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine, and Nobel laureates such as Richard Feynman have revolutionized our understanding of health and the universe.

  • Arts & Entertainment – From composers like Leonard Bernstein to filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and authors like Philip Roth, Jewish Americans have shaped the cultural landscape with creativity and brilliance.

  • Social Justice & Civil Rights – Many Jewish Americans were integral in the Civil Rights Movement, working alongside leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and continue to be powerful voices for equality today.

  • Entrepreneurship & Innovation – Jewish American entrepreneurs have played key roles in building businesses, advancing technology, and driving economic growth.

A Legacy of Community and Giving

At the heart of Jewish American life is a strong sense of community, education, and tikkun olam — a Hebrew phrase meaning “repairing the world.” Whether through philanthropy, activism, or everyday acts of kindness, Jewish Americans have long embodied the values of justice, compassion, and collective responsibility.

Celebrating and Educating

Jewish American Heritage Month is not only a time to honor the past, but also to educate, celebrate, and uplift voices that continue to inspire future generations. Whether attending cultural events, visiting museums, reading works by Jewish authors, or simply learning more about Jewish history, there are countless ways to engage and celebrate this meaningful month.

Let’s Reflect, Honor, and Grow

As we celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month in 2025, let’s take a moment to:

  • Appreciate the rich diversity Jewish Americans bring to our communities

  • Stand in solidarity against antisemitism and all forms of hate

  • Share stories of resilience, brilliance, and leadership

  • Continue learning and listening

Together, we honor the past, recognize the present, and look forward to a future where all communities are celebrated for their unique contributions and shared humanity.
