Honoring Purple Heart Day — August 7, 2025

by Ernest Van Glahn

Today we pause to honor the brave U.S. service members who were wounded or who gave their lives in defense of our nation. The Purple Heart, awarded by the President, is one of the highest symbols of courage, sacrifice, and selflessness in the U.S. military.

Behind every Purple Heart is a story.

A young Marine wounded while pulling a fellow soldier to safety.
A medic injured while shielding others from gunfire.
A service member who never came home — but whose name is etched in both stone and memory.

These stories aren’t always shared, but they are never forgotten.

Originally established by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, the Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given today. It is more than a medal — it's a mark of incredible bravery in the face of unimaginable danger.
