Honoring Veterans Day and Celebrating the 249th Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps

by Ernest Van Glahn

Each November, we have the honor of commemorating two significant events: Veterans Day on November 11 and the United States Marine Corps Birthday on November 10. Both days hold profound meaning, reminding us of the courage, resilience, and dedication of those who serve and have served in our nation’s armed forces. This year is especially memorable as the U.S. Marine Corps celebrates its 249th birthday—a testament to nearly two and a half centuries of loyal service and sacrifice.

The History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on November 11, 1918, marking the end of World War I. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the holiday to Veterans Day, expanding it to honor all veterans who have served our country, not just those who fought in World War I. Today, Veterans Day serves as a tribute to the nearly 19 million veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a time to reflect on their sacrifices, courage, and the freedom they have helped secure for every American.

Across the United States, Veterans Day is marked with parades, ceremonies, and heartfelt gatherings. Communities and organizations work together to show appreciation for the men and women who have stood up to protect our nation. From all walks of life and every corner of our diverse nation, veterans have shaped the story of America with their dedication, making this day a poignant reminder of our nation’s strength and unity.

The 249th Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps

Every year on November 10, the Marine Corps celebrates its birthday with ceremonies that honor its rich history and traditions. Established in 1775, the Marine Corps has been an essential branch of the U.S. military, known for its distinctive esprit de corps, unfailing commitment to duty, and unmatched effectiveness on land, sea, and air. From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, the Marine Corps has left an indelible mark on global history.

This year, as the Marine Corps marks its 249th birthday, we honor its legacy and pay tribute to the values of honor, courage, and commitment that define the Corps. Marines around the world, active duty and veterans alike, come together to celebrate their bond, remembering the legacy passed down through generations of leathernecks. The Marine Corps’ rich tradition of excellence and dedication continues to inspire each new generation, ensuring that the sacrifices of past Marines are never forgotten.

A Shared Legacy of Service

Both Veterans Day and the Marine Corps Birthday are reminders of the profound impact that service members have on our lives. Veterans have stood as defenders of freedom, facing down challenges, whether in the trenches of World War I, on the beaches of Normandy, or in modern-day conflicts. The Marine Corps, known for its distinctive motto "Semper Fidelis," meaning "Always Faithful," embodies the spirit of unwavering commitment, a sentiment shared by all branches of the military.

In honor of these special days, let us take time to express gratitude, not only for the heroes of the past but also for those who currently stand watch. Supporting our veterans and active service members ensures we continue to honor their sacrifices while helping them reintegrate and succeed in civilian life.

As we celebrate Veterans Day and the 249th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, let us remember the words of President Ronald Reagan: "Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don’t have that problem." These words resonate with all veterans who have served selflessly for the sake of their fellow Americans.
